Applying Make Up - a PrimerApplying make up doesn't have to be hard. Once you know a little and you get some practice, it can be easy and fun. There are no real rules for applying make up. You can be creative, but you also don't want to look like a clown or a woman of the night (unless you are one of those two things). So let's lay down a few guidelines for starting out. The main thing to consider before you start is to think about where you're going. You may be going to work at the bank, you may be going to a concert, you may be going to a funeral. I don't think I have to elaborate. Let's start with whether to wear foundation or not. Generally speaking, most women don't need foundation. Unfair as it is, this is especially true for young women. Foundation can give a somewhat cakey appearance, rather than highlighting the skin. If your skin is clear and pretty even, you may want to skip foundation altogether. If your skin is just uneven in color, then a light liquid foundation can do a lot to help. Just make careful you pick a shade that closely matches your skin tone. Most women have a few dark spots or blemishes that they will want to cover up. So start with applying a liquid concealer. Concealer can go under the eyes to cover dark circles too. Then set it with a good powder. Now that you have your concealer is on, here comes the fun. One of the most important rules when applying make up is less is more, so take it easy. You should decide whether you want to highlight your eyes or your lips. If you emphasize both, you may find that having dark eyes and dark lips at the same time is a bit too much for most situations. For your eyes, simply brush on one coat of a light powder over the entire eyelid, starting from your lash line and going up to the brow. This will create highlights and really open up your eye. For a good, simple look, just add mascara. For a more dramatic look, apply a darker shade to the outside corner of your eyelids, blending it toward the lashes and the crease of your eye. Then add mascara. With practice you'll find it gets easier and easier. If you've chosen a simple eye look, then feel free to go hard with the lipstick. A dramatic shade of dark red looks beautiful on many women. One trick you can use is to cover the lip with lip liner before applying the lipstick. This helps your color last longer. If you earlier went for a more dramatic eye look, then use a light or neutral color lip gloss to add some shine. Okay, the more you practice the better (and faster) you'll get at it.
